with companies to thoroughly analyze, consult, train, develop new
projects, and assist in marketing. The following are some of the
companies we have serviced and a short description of the projects.

a) Magna Advanced Technologies (G-Mag International Inc.)
Magna Advanced
Technologies is part of Magna International Inc. the largest automotive
supplier in Ontario with sales over 20 billion dollars. As a consultant
for the last 2.5 years I have provided the following services:
- Assisted
in developing an operational costing program to establish machine
rates for a business plan.
- Wrote two
manuals a) Thixomolding® Part Design Guidelines© Manual
(55 pages) – this manual was to help them design parts in
magnesium that could be successfully Thixomolded® in high
production; the focus being on the design of parts and the tolerance
capability of the technology to mold precision parts that currently
are die-casted and machined, and b)
Thixomolding®
Tooling Design Guidelines© Manual (69 pages)– this
manual focused 1) establishing the correct size of machine for
a given part, the cavitation limits, screw speed, nozzle size,
sprue size (hot or cold), runner sizes and gate sizes using fill
time as the primary limiting factor and 2) reviewing many of the
mold design issues, some that are necessary such as vacuum assist
(venting and drawing vacuum prior to injection) and oil heating
and others that are options such as different ejection methods,
materials of construction of mold base, inserts, ejector pins
etc. and the heat treating requirements for each material.
- In CADKEY
established plant design for current and future operations.
- Held training
programs for engineering staff in part and tool design, using
the manuals as a basis for the classes.
- Held training
programs for management and sales staff into the theory of Thixomolding®.
- Trained
individual engineers in both part design and tool design by day
to day analysis of new components.
- Helped bring
two projects from prototyping into production readiness.
- Assisted
with marketing by holding part design training sessions with potential
Magna customers.
- Assisted
Marketing by establishing mold design and processing parameters
for quoting purposes e.g. cavitation, cycle times, and tolerances.
- Helped them
to locate new toolrooms from which they could purchase molds and
trim dies, and worked with these toolrooms to establish procedures
that will allowed the client to build precision molds.
- Project
management for outsourcing mold design and tool build when clients
are beyond capacity in house.
b) École Polytechnique
A new research
facility that has acquired a new 500 ton Husky thixomolder for their
research facility located in Boucherville.
- Project
management – handled their prototype molds for making T
bars and spiral parts. Designed the molds with vacuum and had
them constructed by an outside toolroom.
- Worked with
client to enusre full operational condition of tools.
c) Coalcoat
Ltd.
Coalcoat are
an electronics thixomolder in Japan. I was a conslsutant with them
for over 6 months.
- Analyzed
their current operations and wrote a report that outlined all
their production problems
- Developed
a plan that if implemented would improve their production operations
- Ran 3 day
training session with their engineering and production supervisors
on part design, mold design and processing for Thixomolding®.
- Ran a one
day training session for their managerial and sales staff on the
fundamentals of Thixomolding® and the kind of parts that lend
themselves well to the process. They had previously been manufacturing
only thin walled components – laptop housings, cell phones
and projector housings.
